Tribute To The New York Black Yankees : 2023

Sunday August 27, 2023 TD Bank Ballpark
The Somerset Patriots (NY Yankees AA-affiliate) will feature a tribute to the New York Black Yankees
The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a commemorative baseball card strip featuring Black Yankees: Clarence "Fats" Jenkins, Bill "Speed" Holland and Clint "Hawk" Thomas

Despite playing in uniforms that resembled the New York Yankees, the Black Yankees never had a true brand to call their own. The Patriots have envied a logo designed specifically to honor the Black Yankees' heritage that is unique to the historic team

The logo was designed with interlocking BY to put the emphasis on the Negro League team versus the city of New York or the NY Yankees brand. The logo was designed by Ryan Foose, an award winning designer who has worked for ESPN, MiLB, NCAA and others
The patriots will play in a special themed jersey to honor the Black Yankees, with the new BY logo on the sleeve. The game-soon jerseys will be auctioned off online to benefit the Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum (SSAAM), Skillman NJ

Hinchliffe Stadium

Hinchliffe Stadium, Patterson, New Jersey

One of the few remaining stadiums associated with the Negro Leagues. The concrete Art Deco styled stadium was built in 1932, the stadium was owned by the Paterson Public Schools since 1963 and was closed in 1996. The facility fell victim to neglect and vandalism. At its peak the stadium was home to Negro League baseball, high school events, boxing, auto racing, rock concerts....

Larry Doby, star athlete at Patterson Eastside High School was discovered by the Newark Eagles on this field. Dob would become the first black baseball player in the American League and the second in Major League Baseball

The Colored Championship of the Nation, was the first baseball event held at Hincliffe in 1933.
The New York Black Yankees played their home games at Hinchliffe for 12 seasons, starting in 1934. The New York Cubans called the stadium home for the 1935 and 1936 seasons
