Johnny "Schoolboy" Taylor Tribute : 2023

The Yard Goats took the field as The Hartford Schoolboys: Honoring the rich legacy of Negro League Baseball, and Johnny "Schoolboy" Taylor (1916 – 1987), was an American Negro league pitcher in the 1930s and 1940s. A native of Hartford, Connecticut, Taylor joined the New York Cubans in 1935, and tossed a no-hitter against Satchel Paige's All-Stars at the Polo Grounds in 1937. In 1938, Taylor was selected to play in the East–West All-Star Game, and hurled two scoreless innings of relief. Taylor played briefly for the Newark Eagles in 1940

The Cleveland Indians retired Larry Doby's jersey #14.Doby was the second back baseball player to cross the color barrier, when he entered the game on July 5, 1947, as a pinch-hitter for relief pitcher Bryan Stephens. Doby struck out in his first at-bat. He would get his first hit the following day in the second game of a double-header against the Chicago White Sox.

Doby would go on to play for the Indians (1947-1955, 1958) Chicago White Sox (1956-1957, 1959) Detroit Tigers (1959) Chunuchu Dragons (Japan 1962)

Doby's career batting average was .283, 253 home runs, 970 RBI

  • AL RBI Leader (1954)
  • Cleveland Hall of Fame (1966)

Prior to breaking into the Major Leagues, Larry Doby played for the Newark Eagles (Negro Leagues 1944, 1946-1947) and San Juan Senators (Puerto Rico 1946)

1942 hit .391. After serving in the military, Doby returned to the Eagles in 1946, helping them to win the Negro World Championship...
1947 Doby was batting .414 when he was signed by the Cleveland Indians to become the first Negro to play in the American League...
In his rookie season, 1948, Doby led the Indians against the Braves with a .318 World Series batting average. The Indians would defeat the Braves in 4 games, Doby hitting the winning home run in game 4.

1954 hit 32 home runs to lead the American League in home runs and RBIs.

Larry Dody served as Director of Community Relations for the NJ Nets of the NBA..
