2001 Stitches in Time
2001 Fleer Traditions - Stitches in Time.
I was recently introduced to this set by a friend. A 25 card insert sub-set of the 2001 Fleer Traditions cards, dedicated to the Negro Leagues. Parallels include autographs (Banks, Black, Irvin, O'Neil, Radcliffe and Wilson). Mays did not agree to sign any cards. Unsigned cards have appeared on the secondary market with forged signatures

While visiting Cooperstown, my boys participated in a scavenger hunt to answer questions about the Hall. Their prize was a pack of Cooperstown baseball educational cards. The cards featured subjects like the above Civil Rights card showing Satchel paige, along with cards about Disabilities in Baseball, Geography and Baseball, Labor History, Character Education, Artifacts, Science, Communication Arts...

Elston Howard became the first African-American to play for the NY Yankees, when he took his position as catcher against the Baltimore Orioles on April 20, 1955. Prior to being signed by the Yankees, Howard signed with the KC Monarchs out of high school. Howard had turned down several scholarships to play football to sign with the Monarchs in 1948.
In 1950 the Monarchs would sell his contract to the New York Yankees. Howard would start his Yankee career with the Class A Muskegon Clippers, by 1954 the Yankees brought Howard to their "Yankee Prospects School" during spring training. April 14, 1950 Howard would make his Yankee debut at Fenway Park, getting a base hit and an RBI in his first at-bat. On April 20, Howard would make his debut at Yankee Stadium. Howard would stay with the Yankees until 1967, when he was traded to the Boston Red Sox. In 1969 Howard would return to the Yankees as the first black coach in the American League.
July 21, 1984 the New York Yankees would honor Howard by retiring his number 32 and placing a plaque in Monument Park. Roger Maris was honored on the same day as Howard...

Larry Doby (1923-2003)
July 5, 1947 a few months after Jackie Robinson broke the Major League Baseball color barrier, Larry Doby made his debut for the American League Cleveland Indians. Doby would go on to appear in seven All-Star games and finish second in the 1954 American League MVP voting.- 1998 inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame

- 2007 the Indians again honored Doby on August 10, 2007 as Larry Doby Day..
- 2010 inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame
- 2012 Indians rename Eagle Ave next to the Indians' Progressive Field as Larry Doby Way
Starting his career with the Newark Eagles 1942-1943, 1946, he would move on to the Indians from 1947-1955, 1958, Chicago White Sox 1956-1957, 1959, Detroit Tigers 1959 and finally in Japan with the Chunichi Dragons in 1962. Doby would also manage the Chicago White Sox in 1978 (becoming the second black manager in the Major Leagues following Frank Robinson)...
July 20, 2012 Cooperstown, NY - the USPS will honor Doby along with Joe DiMaggio, Willie Stargell and Ted Williams, four players who captured the imagination of the public for their exploits on and off the playing field. The stamps were designed by Kadir Nelson and based on historic photographs of each of the men.

Rube Foster - Negro Leagues
July 15, 2010...the USPS issued 2 stamps to honor Rube Foster and the Negro Leagues, which operated from 1920 into the 1960s. The se-tenant stamp features a scene painted by Kadir Nelson...The stamps were issued at the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, Kansas City, Mo. In attendance as honored guests to the dedication ceremony were Mamie "Peanut" Johnson and Cleophus Brown...

The US Postal service decided not to focus on one particular player, especially since Josh Gibson, Stachel Paige and Jackie Robinson had recently been honored as part of the Legends of Baseball, 2000. Working with art director Howard Paine, Nelson choose to create a se-tenant design with the image stretching across both stamps. The left-hand stamp shows the excitement of the game, while the right-hand stamp features Rube Foster, founder of the first successful Negro baseball league.

The Jackie Robinson stamps was the issued in , to honor Robinson's contribution to "breaking the color barrier". In 1983 the USPS issued a stamp to honor Babe Ruth, and the stamp was issued in Chicago to coincide withe the 50th anniversary of the All-Star game. I had the privilege of being a part of a group that had the stamps shipped from Chicago on the day of issue, to New York, where our group traveled the area to obtain unofficial first day cancels. Along with some friends, Bob and Billy, we went to the Brooklyn Main Post Office to request hand cancels on several covers. After some time the postmaster agreed to our request and had the covers canceled. I choose to add the Jackie Robinson stamp to the covers since both Ruth and Robinson had worn the Brooklyn Dodgers uniform. Ruth served as a first base coach for the last few months of the 1938 season.

Jackie Robinson
Jackie Robinson is probably the most honored player from the Negro Leagues, due to his being the first black player to enter Major League Baseball (1947-1957 Brooklyn Dodgers). Memorabilia ranges from his rookie baseball cards (1948 Bowman and 1948-49 Leaf), programs, comic books, magazines and books, photos, buttons (the yellow border button from my collection) and many other items still being produced.
Major League Baseball honored Robinson by retiring his number from all major league teams on April 15, 1997...On the 60th anniversary of Robinson entering the MLB, Ken Griffey Jr requested of Robinson's widow Rachel if he could wear the number 42 on Jackie Robinson Day in his honor. The request was granted and extended to all players, which continues to this day.
I am in favor of honoring Jackie Robinson, I don't necessarily agree with every player wearing the number 42. My reasoning is there were many others in baseball who are not getting recognition. Larry Doby gets little mention as the first black to play in the American League, second to Robinson overall. MLB does not honor Native Americans, the first being Louis Socalexis playing in 1897 along with Chief Bender, Jim Thorpe, Zack Wheat and many others. The first Japanese player Masanori Murakami 1964, not followed until Hideo Nomo came in 1995. Esteban Bellan 1871 joined by a long list of players...
Citi Field honored Jackie Robinson by erected his number 42 in the Jackie Robinson Rotunda dedicated 2009. I have been to Citi Field twice (for a baseball game and a soccer game) and I think it is a great park, but I have to wonder why the number 42? Why not a statue or plaque?
I have to question why honor Robinson, when he did not play for the Mets, he played for the Dodgers. Why not honor other members of the Brooklyn Dodgers or the NY Giants, why are we selective in honoring one person? You may disagree, and I am not saying Robinson does not deserve the attention he receives, but let's honor all who are just as deserving. After a while honoring one individual can lose it's appeal and meaning...

Jackie Robinson - 50th Anniversary Silver Dollar
The 1997 Jackie Robinson Silver Dollar was issued in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Robinson's appearance in a major league baseball game, as the first black player to integrate the league. The obverse of the silver dollar portrays Jackie Robinson sliding into home plate, just as he did in the 1955 World Series game. The reverse of the coin displays the logo of the Jackie Robinson Foundation. Inscriptions read two accomplishments for Rookie of the Year 1947 and Hall of Fame induction 1962.Sunday, January 16, 2011
